University Teaching Awards

The Outstanding University Teacher Awards Program recognizes individuals who have demonstrated long-term teaching excellence at Illinois State University. By honoring such individuals, the university demonstrates its commitment to teaching excellence and student learning.

The program encompasses four award categories. Each category title is linked to application guidelines, which were revised in Spring 2006.

  • Outstanding University Teacher Award (Category I)

The Outstanding University Teacher Award-Category I (OUTA-I) recognizes tenured or tenure track faculty.

  • Outstanding University Teacher Award (Category II)

The Outstanding Teacher Award-Category II (OUTA-II) is for full- or part-time teachers with non-tenure track appointments and for administrative professionals and civil service employees with University credit-generating teaching responsibilities.

  • Teaching Initiative Award

The Teaching Initiative Award is for assistant professors who have shown considerable promise in teaching early in their academic careers. Those eligible have at least two years of full-time teaching on a tenure track at Illinois State University, but not more than five years of full-time, tenure track university-level teaching experience at ISU and elsewhere, combined.

  • Outstanding University Graduate Student Teaching Awards

The Outstanding University Graduate Student Teaching Award is to recognize outstanding contributions to teaching made by graduate students as part of their program and educational experience at Illinois State University. Awards are at three levels:

    • Level I Masters-Assistants with sole responsibility for instruction in a course.
    • Level I Doctorate-Assistants with sole responsibility for instruction in a course.
    • Level II Masters or Doctorate-Assistants directing labs or discussion groups associated with a course taught by a faculty member, or who have significant responsibilities team or co-teaching a course.
